The Candidates

Pedro Nava (D), Assemblyman, 35th District (2004-2010)

Since Pedro Nava's election to the State Assembly in 2004, he has shown a strong commitment to working families, public safety, women's health, and protecting the environment.

He is well known in the arena of women's issues. Since his election, he has led the charge to protect the victims of sexually violent predators (most often women) and ensure that these criminals are appropriately identified and prosecuted and kept out of our neighborhoods and communities.

As a legislator, he has been a fierce advocate for the improvement of women's health, equality in the workplace and women's issues. He has spent the last year campaigning with the Legislative Women's Caucus, Komen for the Cure, the American Cancer Society and others against Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's initiative to roll back eligibility for women in the state's low-income breast cancer screening program, Every Woman Counts. He has authored bills that eliminate barriers to women's health care, streamline family planning benefits, increase public awareness of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, and ensure that the most modern technologies are employed when screening for breast cancer.

Nava has a long history of community service in the area of women's issues and health, serving as a board member of Santa Barbara Women Lawyers and as an honorary board member of the Santa Barbara Rape Crisis Center. Nava was also a recipient of the first Women's Economic Ventures "Man of Equality" award and was honored by the Junior Leagues of California in 2008 as their "Legislator of the Year."
